09 Jan Experience – Essay on Gender Stereotypes
Speaking Through Art — Vangelis Pappas
Often we worry and write inside ourselves about what happens around us but we may not know how to express it. Art came to give the answer for one more time to our group. After discussions on gender stereotypes, we decided to take out our cameras and capture some of those stereotypes in photographs. Alongside, we wrote accompanying texts, telling the stories, thoughts that had been generated, seeking an artistic outlet. All these we compiled and managed to set up an exhibition titled “In Their Shoes”, trying each of us to step into at least a little bit the positions of other people who might be struggling. At the center of the exhibition space, we called the audience to fill in positive messages around the topic, as “a small antidote” to the negative perception, prejudices, and unfortunate events that continue to exist in our society.
